On November 7, the latest data released by market research agency SNE Search showed that the total battery usage of registered electric vehicles (EV, PHEV, HEV) globally from January to September this year was approximately 485.9GWh, an increase of 44.4% over the same period last year. 

Analysis of the top 10 global power battery installations from January to September 

with the global power battery installed volume from January to September are: CATL, BYD, LG New Energy, Panasonic, SK On, China New Aviation, Samsung SDI, Guoxuan Hi-Tech, Yiwei Lithium Energy, and Sunwanda.


As can be seen from the above figure, Chinese companies still occupy 6 seats, with a market share of 62.9% . The top two CATL and BYD still have a combined market share of more than half, reaching 52.6%. 

China's China New Aviation, Guoxuan Hi-tech, Yiwei Lithium Energy, and Sunwoda ranked 6th, 8th, 9th, and 10th respectively. 

Judging from the year-on-year growth rate, there are four companies with more than 50%, all of which are from China , namely Yiwei Lithium Energy (124%), China New Aviation (74%), BYD (71.4%), CATL (52.1%) ). 

The market share of the three Korean companies is 23.8%. Although the usage of power batteries has increased, their market share hasdropped by 1.1 percentage points compared with the same period last year. LG New Energy ranked 3rd, SK On ranked 5th, and Samsung SDI ranked 7th. 

Panasonic is still the only Japanese company to enter the top ten , with battery usage from January to September this year being 33.8GWh, an increase of 32.3% over the same period last year. Panasonic's growth was driven by the Tesla Model Y, which announced a reduction in battery production last September but saw sales rise rapidly compared with the same period last year. 

SNE analysis said that price competitiveness rather than performance has become a hot topic at present . Accordingly, many companies are using lithium iron phosphate batteries that are more price competitive than ternary batteries, while South Korea, which focuses on high-nickel batteries, Battery companies have also announced battery roadmaps for lithium iron phosphate and high-voltage medium nickel. "As countries raise trade barriers, such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), it becomes difficult for Chinese companies with strong lithium iron phosphate batteries to directly enter the market, and changes in market share have attracted much attention."

CATL has made a lot of moves recently. Only in terms of Shenxing super-chargeable batteries, Ningde Times signed three consecutive contracts in October. They jointly announced the launch of Shenxing super-charged batteries with Chery Group in Chery Xingtu Xingxing Era, signed a deepening strategic cooperation agreement with Nezha Automobile, and signed a deepening strategic cooperation agreement with BAIC Motor. New Energy jointly held the Shenxing supercharged battery product launch meeting. On November 3, CATL officially signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Lantu Automobile. In addition, at the launch of Shenxing Supercharged Batteries in August, Avita announced that it would become the first new energy vehicle brand to be equipped with Shenxing Supercharged Batteries, which shows CATL’s ability to expand its customer base. In terms of production capacity, on the evening of October 19, CATL revealed in response to investor questions that the company’s Hungarian battery factory has a planned production capacity of 100GWh. The first phase of construction has started and is expected to be completed in about two years; on October 27, the total investment was approximately 16 billion Yuan, the Guizhou base, including five projects including new energy batteries, battery materials and battery recycling, was officially putinto production. 

BYD , a joint venture between BYD and Weichai Power, started construction on the Weichai (Yantai) New Energy Power Industrial Park project with a total investment of 56 billion yuan on November 3. The project includes a power battery R&D and manufacturing base that will have an annual battery manufacturing capacity of 50GWh upon completion. BYD announced on the evening of November 1 that the total installed capacity of new energy vehicle power batteries and energy storage batteries in October was approximately 15.286GWh, and the total installed capacity in 2023 will be approximately 116.217GWh. BYD's monthly sales of new energy vehicles exceeded the 300,000 mark for the first time in October, reaching 301,833 units. Since the beginning of this year, BYD's cumulative sales of new energy vehicles have reached 2.3815 million units, a year-on-year increase of more than 70%. 

According to LG New Energy news on October 5, LG New Energy announced that it has signed an electric vehicle battery supply agreement with Toyota Motor North America for use in Toyota pure electric vehicles assembled and produced in the United States.

LG New Energy will deliver 20GWh of automotive battery modules toToyota starting in 2025. The modules are composed of high-nickel NCMA pouch cells and will be produced at LG New Energy's Michigan factory. Panasonic Battery cut its full-year profit forecast by 15% in late October due to lower-than-expected sales of Tesla's high-end electric cars, one of its most important customers .

There is news that demand for Tesla electric vehicles in the North American market is slowing down. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, some of Tesla's high-end electric vehicle models are not eligible for tax incentives. 

Panasonic has previously warned about global demand for electric vehicles. Tesla, General Motors and Ford have slowed the expansion of electric car factories due to rising financing costs and weaker-than-expected economic growth in places such as Europe, where auto demand is expected to weaken. 

The latest news from SK On shows that Polestar announced that it has signed a battery supply agreement with SK On. Polestar's Polestar 5, which is positioned as a luxury high-performance pure electric 4-door GT coupe, will be equipped with SK On battery modules. However, it is reported that the Polestar 5 model will not start production until 2025. Judging from the battery installation volume of China Airlines in September, China Airlines ranked fourth in the world. China New Aviation has achieved coverage of all Xpeng models. In the latest October, Xpeng Motors’ monthly sales reached more than 20,000 vehicles. In addition, Zhongxin Aviation focuses on ultra-high-rate batteries, supporting all Haopin SSR models, entering the field of luxury smart electric vehicles, realizing a full-circle industrial layout, gradually optimizing its customer structure, and its future development is worth looking forward to. 

Samsung SDI On October 23, Samsung SDI announced that it has signed an electric vehicle battery supply contract with Hyundai Motor Company and will supply batteries to Hyundai Motor’s next-generation European battery vehicles for seven years from 2026 to 2032. It is reported that this is the first battery supply contract signed between Samsung SDI and Hyundai Motor. It will supply the sixth-generation prismatic battery P6 under development to Hyundai Motor. 

Guoxuan High-tech Guoxuan High-tech is vigorously developing overseas markets. On the evening of October 25, Guoxuan Hi-Tech announced that it plans to invest US$2.364 billion (approximately 17.3 billion yuan) in battery materials projects in Michigan.On October 11, Guoxuan Hi-Tech announced that it plans to invest in the construction of a lithium battery production line project in Illinois, USA. It is reported that Guoxuan Hi-Tech will spend US$2 billion (approximately 14.7 billion yuan) to build a new electric vehicle lithium battery factory in Manteno, Kankakee County, the state, focusing on lithium-ion batteries, battery pack production and energy storage system integration. After completion, it is expected to produce 10GWh lithium-ion battery packs and 40GWh lithium-ion battery cells, with production expected to begin in 2024. 

EVE Lithium Energy On October 12, it was reported that BMW’s domestic orders of nearly 70GWh will be provided by CATL and EVE Lithium Energy. In the future, if Yiwei Lithium Energy can withstand BMW's quality test, it will become the key to opening up more customer markets. Previously, Yiwei Lithium Energy said that the commercialization of its 46 series large cylindrical batteries is progressing smoothly. In the first half of the year, 1 million 46 series large cylindrical batteries have been rolled off the production line, and it has now entered the mass production stage. Starting from September in the third quarter of this year, batch production and delivery will be achieved. It was stated in the semi-annual report that after receiving important orders from first-class overseas car companies, Yiwei Lithium Energy's 46series large cylindrical batteries have successively achieved fixed-point placement with more domestic and foreign car companies, and have now obtained customer intention in the next five years. The total orders are approximately 472.31GWh. 

Sunwanda recently made a splash at the 2023 Tokyo Mobility Exhibition in Japan, welcoming exchange visits from well-known Japanese automobile manufacturing companies such as Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, and Subaru. Shin Kong Corporation and many other well-known Japanese companies signed strategic cooperation agreements with Sunwoda Power at the booth. The signing partners all come from energy industries such as new energy vehicles, energy storage, industrial machinery, and electric power. The signing representatives are very optimistic about the technology and products of Sunwanda Power.
